The Crownsguard — Sworn Protectors of the Royal Demigods

As the demigods generally prove stronger than mankind, positions in the Crownsguard are more ceremonial positions than anything else and meant to celebrate some of the best knights in the Empire. As such, much darkness and gatekeeping are present among its ranks.

Vega Frey

The sworn protector of Crown Prince Sophiel. As the first common-born member of the Crownsguard, Vega has been subject to much scorn and envy among the members of the court. Despite her exceptional swordsmanship, it is speculated that her assignment to the 5-year-old prince was an attempt to sideline her to what is effectively babysitting. However, she in gaining Prince Sophiel’s favor and affection, she has also been gaining Empress Altaire’s favor as well.

Nikola Novak

The sworn protector of Second Prince Arien and one of his only friends in the court. Although Nikola is capable with both his sword and his wit, it is said that Nikola also made it into the Crownsguard’s ranks by the skin of his teeth. Like Vega, Nikola is also subject to mockery and scorn, but it is due to his bastard blood. Desperate for validation, Nikola always strives for above and beyond and to carry out his duties to perfection.

Elias Dupré

The greatest living swordsman in the Empire and the leader of the Crownsguard knights. Although Elias is formally sworn to protect his niece, Empress Altaire, he is more loyal to —and more often seen with— his younger brother, Archduke Valérian, as he is aware that House Dupré is perceived as a band of usurpers by a number of noble houses. Elias has personally trained some members of the royal family in martial combat, including Arien, and beneath his stoic face lies a vulgar appetite for bloodshed.
